Partner Overview
Last August, Peru was rocked by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake. Four hundred people were killed, 1,000 people were seriously injured, and 15,000 homes were badly damaged. As a result of this event and previously existing economic challenges, thousands of surviving children are in peril, facing worsening poverty, and a diminished standard of living.
The Cono Norte Callao district is located in Lima, Peru. This district contains over 20,000 children living in desperately impoverished conditions. Gangs, violence, drugs, and extreme poverty are all prevalent in this area. Children grow up working on the street instead of going to school. Their families need them to work so that they can earn enough money for the family to have food. Families in this region are typically headed by a single parent. The poverty that these children experience drowns out all of their dreams as they become entangled in the cycle of poverty; living day to day trying to make enough money to survive.
The Corazones Felices (Happy Hearts) program reaches out to over 330 children in Cono Norte Callao district. It provides clothing, food, medicine, and Bible teaching for these impoverished families. There is also psychological, medical, and legal help available. Corazones Felices works in the community to combat child abuse.
The long term goal of Corazones Felices is to grow the leaders of tomorrow from the poor neighborhoods in the Cono Norte Callao. Through Bible teaching and outreach, they are developing the character of the children. Corazones Felices provides for the tangible and spiritual needs of the children which otherwise go unmet by their families and community.
Corazones Felices also holds workshops for the parents of the children in their programs. They offer services such as family counseling as needed. Corazones Felices not only cares for and nurtures children, but also works to bring transformation and wholeness to broken families.
