The small town of Katosi, on the banks of Lake Victoria, is a poor area with many AIDS orphans. With limited opportunities for education and jobs, girls marry at age 12 or 13. Children who can’t pay, can not attend school and are often left at home while their parents go in search of work. Only 20% of the population has completed 7th grade.
A small church in Katosi created the Katosi Community Center to provide education and food for the underprivileged children there. It is one of only four schools for the 10,000 children in the town. The cost of school fees for one child can be one third of a family’s annual income.
The Katosi Community Center has grown with the leadership of eight board members and the work of the 180 members of the church. Their current focus is to improve education. School, school fees and one meal a day are provided for 456 children. Trained teachers and assistants have been recruited and their salaries supplemented to attract and retain high quality staff. Church members are involved as volunteers to help cook meals, clean the school, aid the teachers and care for the orphans.
This project was developed and is operated by the local church. The vision includes the entire community with a heart to improve the quality of life in practical ways and to help people feel the love of Jesus. The community is caring for and educating its children.
Funding for this project provides operational support for food and school fees for 127 orphans, and high quality teachers for the community.
