Stories From the Field:

Christine Njovu is a 67 years old widow with HIV. She came to Isubilo for help in June 2006. She was very sick and constantly complained of painful legs and skin rashes. She has 5 children and providing for them was a constant struggle. Despite her continuing battle she never gave up her trust in Christ.

Recently she has seen improvements in her health. Barbara is one of the leader’s at Isubilo.  She went to her garden and picked several cabbages. Barbara sent Christine to the market and told her she could keep any profit over 10,000 Kwatcha ($2 USD).

Christine came back very excited, repaid Barbara the 10,000 Kwatcha, smiled, and pocketed her profit. They repeated this with other vegetables. Faithfully sticking to this routine Christine has built up a capital of 100,000 Kwatcha!  ($20).

It may not be a huge amount but it has shown Christine that she can keep working and soon be self sufficient. We have been so encouraged by what she has done and see a bright future for her and her family!

Update: October 2007

From Isubilo Director Andy Patching:

“What a wonderful gift those blankets have been! We have been able to give each one of our clients, including of course, all of our 256 orphans and vulnerable children and some of their siblings. It has also been possible to give several hundred to the prisoners whom we minister to weekly, a local orphanage, the pediatric department of a local clinic and to a children’s hospital. They have a large number of HIV infected children now on ARV’s and we were able to give blankets to all the most needy children”.
