Hope Restored in Zambia After Devastating Storms

Samfya, Zambia — In November of last year, a horrific storm hit the town of Samfya, bringing down more than 250 homes in just a few minutes. Roofs were torn off and walls collapsed, leaving many people injured and entire families homeless.

A ferocious storm tore off roofs and flattened 250 homes in Samfya, Zambia last November.

November is the beginning of the rainy season in Zambia and thunderstorms are not uncommon. But the ferocity of this storm was like nothing ever seen before. In town the following morning, all you could see were remnants of broken homes and families without Hope.

Ida Masesa described it like this: “It was a night of chaos. Our roof was okay, but our neighbor’s roof came off and smashed into our house.” Joseph and Elizabeth Mwaba were also home with their five children when their house began to collapse. A falling rafter hit one of their children in the head, putting him in the hospital for several days.

Hope restored as homes rebuilt through the local church

Despite the devastation caused by the storms, the love of Christ is rising through the rubble. Thanks to the local church in Zambia and generous allies at Bright Hope, Hope is being restored. So far, more than 25 homes have been rebuilt!

Anne Mwansa and her family of nine were traveling when the storm hit and came home to their house destroyed. With the help her family received, they were able to rebuild. “We are so grateful to the people of God who came to our rescue,” Anne shared recently.

Prior to the storms, most homes in Samfya were built with grass roofs. The homes that have been rebuilt now have strong, iron sheet roofs to better protect families in the future. As Isaiah 9:10 says, “The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with smooth stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”

This is a wonderful example of how the local church can directly respond to the needs of their community and help rebuild people’s lives.

We are so grateful for your support helping the local church shine like a beacon of Hope to the world!
