Oruro, Bolivia — Milton is 17 years old and works shining shoes in the city of Oruro. His family is from a rural village and when he was eight years old, his father left his mother and his five siblings. Milton was forced to drop out of school and work in the fields to help support his family.

Aoti, Peru – Antonia Yalta has worked as a missionary for Segadores in Aoti, Peru for more than 10 years. A few months ago, Antonia left Aoti and returned to Lima due to continued health problems with her back. She recently was cleared to return, and has been welcomed back into the community of Aoti.

Mathare Community Outreach, Kenya - Dennis Juma was born in Bondo, a rural village in Kenya. His father, the sole breadwinner for the family, died when Dennis was very young. After his father’s death, he, his mother, and his siblings went to live with his paternal grandparents until they kicked the entire family out. Having nowhere else to go his mother moved the family to Mathare Valley because this was the only place where living was affordable. During this time his mother worked domestic jobs in order to provide for Dennis and his siblings, but she was barely able to feed them.

Chicago, Illinois – On Saturday, November 15 Bright Hope held its first ever Gala. More than 850 guests from all over the Chicagoland area and other parts of the country came to the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile to see keynote speaker and former First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush, special guest emcee Roy Patterson from Moody Radio Chicago, and Major League Baseball All-Star Pitcher Justin Masterson.

Kasuba, Zambia—After successfully launching a program to care for those hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Samfya Community Care Providers (SCCP) has now branched out and is caring for a multitude of vulnerable community members. SCCP recently expanded their efforts to include other rural villages.  While only in the beginning stages of this project, one of those communities—Kasuba—has already made tremendous strides toward sustainability.

Beracah, Zambia—Every year, at least 7,830 Zambians—most of them children—die because they do not have clean water. Thankfully, this is something that is easily preventable with the installation of water wells and filters. Since January, Bright Hope’s partner in Zambia has been working with a drilling team in Beracah to drill 10 wells, contributing to the health of their community.

Collins Ochieng first came to the Mathare Valley slum in Nairobi, Kenya in 1991. To survive, he made a living as a cobbler, but he never had a sense of fulfillment. Without a sense of purpose or Hope, he resorted to alcohol and drugs to fill the void.
