Kasuba, Zambia—After successfully launching a program to care for those hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Samfya Community Care Providers (SCCP) has now branched out and is caring for a multitude of vulnerable community members. SCCP recently expanded their efforts to include other rural villages.  While only in the beginning stages of this project, one of those communities—Kasuba—has already made tremendous strides toward sustainability.

Samfya, Zambia – Margret is a widow and a mother to five children. She enrolled in SCCP’s microloan program in 2008 with a $10 loan to begin a garden at her home. Though Margret had never gardened before, she was successful in her harvest and sold her vegetables to fully pay back the loan after four months. In December 2008, she received a loan for $120 and became a farmer, utilizing a maize field to feed and support her family. In the first year she grew 25 bags of maize and 33 bags in 2013. Because of the success of her harvest, Margret sent all five of her children to school, something she never thought she would do.

Samfya, Zambia – Grandmother Emma Kombe is a dedicated and joyful woman in her community, involved with her church and a volunteer in the SCCP Home-Based Care Program that assists the sick and elderly. Emma has dramatically changed her life and grandsons’ futures through the gift of a microloan through Bright Hope project partner Samfya Community of Care Providers.

Samfya, Zambia — In June, our staff from Samfya Community of Care Providers met a widow named Ida, who was bedridden for over a year due to illness. They took her to the hospital and she was tested for HIV/AIDS. The staff stayed in touch with Ida for a week as she went through counseling to prepare her for the test. The results came in: she was positive for HIV.

Samfya, Zambia — Doreen adopted her niece, Mercy, after Doreen's sister died giving birth. Doreen brought Mercy to the nursing room at Samfya Community of Care Providers (SCCP), where she was treated for an eye infection. Besides taking in her sister's child, Doreen also has an infant of her own.

Man on Edge of Death Restored to Health

Samfya, Zambia — On the edge of death, Mr. Mutashala was brought in a wheelbarrow by a friend to the Samfya Community of Care Providers clinic in May. Weighing a startling 77 pounds, he was suffering the devastating effects from HIV. Thanks to our food support program in Samfya, Zambia, Mr. Mutashala now weighs 115 pounds and is back to restored health.

Samfya, Zambia — In 2009, Georgina was divorced and struggling to support her six children. Last year, she was chosen to receive a microloan from her local church. With the microloan and support from her loan group, she began to farm. This year, she’s expecting a bumper crop of cassava and groundnuts and has decided to remove herself from the program, stating that she is now able to care for her family.
