Farmers Receive Forestry Training

Mbabala Island, Zambia — Farmers began forestry training this week in Mbabala. Selected farmers received 500 eucalyptus seedlings to start a forestry project intended to provide firewood, as there's no source of wood on the Island.

Beracah Widow Becomes Self-Sustainable

Beracah, Zambia — Ruthy, a widow trying to support her 8 kids (1 with Down's Syndrome), was added to the Beracah program in 2009 to support the kids' education and provide job training. She was given a $30 loan for a kitchen garden to grow tomatoes, collard greens and Chinese cabbage. The loan was repaid and she earned another for $60 for chicken rearing. She used some of the money to buy inputs from a co-op for maize farming, as well as hiring someone to dig a well on her property for clean water.

Beracah, Zambia — At the close of 2011, the programs at Beracah were thriving. The microloan program invited 51 families to join the program with 48 loan recipients paying back their first loan on time.

Samfya, Zambia — Last November, Samfya Community of Care Providers (SCCP) traveled around the local area to meet with all the church leaders and volunteers to discuss individual programs, sustainability of those programs through different stakeholders, and surveyed each church to determine how Home Based Care best fits into their existing church ministries.

At the workshop, a volunteer from America and representatives from Samfya Water and Sanitation presented a variety of water pumps and well-drilling options and costs for the community to consider.
