We praise God that those conversations were well received, and our church leaders have repented and committed to refocusing their work on their congregations and those in need.

We thank God for our community! All the people that received pigs are doing very well. As the pastor of the church, we have also been the recipients of some of the piglets in the community as a gift of gratitude. With that, the church has begun a piggery project. The program is expanding as many new people are receiving piglets from those in their community. We have faith and hope that this program is going to lift many families from extreme poverty. -Pastor Geoffrey Okoch from the Buikwe District.

Prayer Request

Zambia • December 2020

Pray for Zambia as a nation. Last week we defaulted on some of our international loans. We are likely going to see a continued devaluation of the Zambian Kwacha, which will impact the country and our program in many ways. Already, we have had to drop our maize loan program because the cost of fertilizer became too expensive. In the last 12 months, our pig farmers have seen their incomes from pig sales drop from nearly $200 per pig down to $100 per pig. By January 2021, the pigs will likely be worth only $50 per animal. It could be a tough year ahead.

Prayer Request

Kenya • December 2020

Bolivia • November 2020

We ask our allies to pray for the political situation in Bolivia. The new president, who follows the socialist line of Evo Morales, will be inaugurated on November 8th. With that comes a fear that in this new transition there will be an implementation of very restrictive policies towards the church. As well as measures that will further impoverish the country, which was the case in Cuba and Venezuela.

Please pray for the growing spiritual and physical need in the Aymara (Norte Potosí) and the Cavineña (Amazon jungle) indigenous areas. Zambia recently sent all school-aged children back to school. This is particularly concerning for Zambian high schoolers, who primarily attend boarding schools. We estimate there are over a million children traveling from all over Zambia to their various schools. Please pray that God would protect our school children and teachers from COVID-19 during this risky time. To date, Zambia has gotten off lightly with a low percentage of people affected by the virus, and we continue to pray for God's protection.

Recently our team in Zambia visited a young boy named Billious. Billious is a triple amputee, missing one hand and two legs. Thanks to a prosthetic limb program that the Bright Hope staff in Zambia has been running, we were able to get Billious outfitted with legs. It really has been a miracle to see the transformation in Billious's life. He has gone from crawling around on the ground to running around with his friends and walking to school every day!

Along with the entire community of Oyam, we praise God for a great harvest! Many harvested large bags of corn, beans, and soya beans. Unfortunately, the rain returned early this year before the grains had time to dry thoroughly. Without a proper storage area, the farmers have had no option other than to sell at a low price. Please pray that the Lord will provide a way to resolve this issue.

Praise Report

Zambia • September 2020

Some months ago we asked for prayer for the village of Kalasa Mukosa. The residing chief died, and the community was in the process of selecting a new chief. In recent years, these chief appointments have typically led to years of disputes over who gets the position. In August, Kalasa appointed a new chief. Praise God, the process went very smoothly, and best of all, the man appointed to the post is a Christian. Pray that Chief Washeni Mwansa will hold to his faith (not always easy in a traditional position). And pray that the church committee in Kalasa will be able to forge a strong relationship with the chiefdom, one that will grow Kalasa and bring glory to God.

We have started our compassionate ministry training Kalasa, Zambia. This is one of the most important trainings that we do with our partner church leaders. Please pray for that the church leaders’ hearts would be open to receiving and changing.

More than 70 Bolivian pastors have already died from COVID-19. Please pray that these numbers will not continue to rise. Pray for strength in all Bolivian pastors. Prayer Request

Bolivia • July 2020

Please keep Bolivia in your prayers. From firsthand accounts, the COVID-19 outbreak in Bolivia is worse than what is reflected by the official numbers. In some places, the entire neighborhood has COVID-19 symptoms. There are not enough tests in the cities to test everyone. People are at home fending for themselves because the hospitals don’t have availability to treat them. The private hospitals are overwhelmed. Medical professionals are getting sick. Many people are dying in their homes and in the streets. One of our staff members lives 4 blocks away from a new graveyard they created for COVID-19 deaths. He said it was like a parade every day, because so many people are there burying the dead.

We knew the locusts had arrived in Oyam, an area of northern Uganda where we work, and we knew that most communities have also been suffering from a prolonged drought. These are two potentially catastrophic things. >>>HOWEVER, we received word from Charity, our director in Uganda, that people in Oyam are praising God after the locusts' DISAPPEARING! Please pray the Lord would bless these communities and send just the right weather patterns so the people can have fruitful harvests!

A treasurer of one of our partner churches in Bolivia tested positive for COVID-19 and was transferred to the capitol, 5 hours away. People she had been in contact with were then isolated, including a couple (and their children) who serve with us as volunteer trainers. They live in a small town and we’ve been told that there is a lot of gossip and bad habits there—residents tried to force this family out of the town when they heard they were in isolation. Also, many people began to criticize our partner church for not worshiping the Virgin Mary, saying the church was a promoter of calamity and disease. The pastor of the church was able to distribute food to the family in isolation, as well as to surrounding neighbors. He had he opportunity to talk with them, listen to their fears and criticisms, show them God’s love, and appease them. The people responded well, praise God. Please pray for health and healing for our dear partners who have tested positive or are in isolation.

The nationwide curfew continues, schools and churches are closed, and the extreme poor are experiencing more economic hardship than ever. “In normal times, life is quite difficult and challenging, it’s gotten even more difficult at this time," our staff wrote.

Haiti • Feb 2019

*URGENT* Protests and violence in Haiti started on Thursday, Feb. 7th, and are still going on. People have been on “lockdown”—remaining in their homes and off the streets to avoid the protests and violence. On Feb. 14 the U.S. Department of State ordered the departure of all non-emergency U.S. citizens and their family members. Airlines have been busy with flights bringing people out of Haiti, however several booking agents like Expedia, have blocked any new bookings for flights bringing people to Haiti. Protesters are demanding that President Jovenel Moise resign from his position, but on Feb. 15th he gave a speech refusing to resign. This has left many feeling the protest won’t end until there is agreed upon resolution to the situation. On Feb. 18th some businesses and banks began opening so people could get some needed supplies, but overall there are concerns and caution in leaving their homes. Also, with little movement on roads taking place for weeks, there is uncertainty as to what supplies will be available. Our Bright Hope staff had not left their home yet, though he was planning to do so today. However, he has been in phone contact with the church partners and they are doing fine. The aftershocks were felt as far away as Northeast Haiti where our partner churches are located. These aftershocks caused so much anxiety that many schools cancelled classes.

Just over a month ago we started to see some spiritual warfare taking place in some of the communities we work in in Uganda. Please pray for the churches to stay strong in following God and to keep doing the things they are doing in their communities that are drawing people to Jesus and the church. Also pray for the pastors and their leadership under this spiritual warfare. It appears that people of the Islamic faith are taking notice of the outreach and impact our church partners are having in their community. They are seeing that people are being drawn to the Christian churches we work with and that lives are being changed and commitments are being made to Jesus. In response to this they have built a mosque next to two of the churches and an Islamic school and mosque nearby a third church. The Islamic church is also giving away cows to people who convert to Islam. We are told it feels like they are “competing for people.” Our field staff are encouraging the pastors to stay strong and keep doing what they are doing, but the spiritual warfare can be felt and they are worried.
