As we reach the halfway point of the year, we want to share an important update from Haiti—a nation facing immense trials yet still full of God’s light and purpose. To give us an on-the-ground perspective, our President and CEO, C.H. Dyer had the joy of speaking with Caleb, one of Bright Hope’s key leaders in Haiti and a passionate servant of Christ.
Caleb, a native of Haiti, has served faithfully with Bright Hope for several years, working with church partners across northeastern Haiti. Now living in Canada with his wife and 8-month-old son, he continues to lead and support Bright Hope’s ministry from afar. His heart for his home country remains strong—and so does his faith in what God can do.
A Nation in Crisis
Caleb painted a sobering picture of life in Haiti today. The country has been without a functioning, elected government for nearly a decade. Political instability has given rise to widespread corruption, gang violence, and injustice.
“Around 90% of the capital is under gang control,” Caleb shared. “Neighborhoods have been burned, people killed, and over a million people are now displaced. Families are fleeing, schools are closed, and even major hospitals have shut down.”
Over 60% of the population faces food insecurity, and the threat of a full-scale humanitarian crisis looms large. Roads are dangerous or impassable, making it difficult to get essential supplies to communities in need. Even in the countryside, families are struggling to survive.
Yet even in the face of darkness, Caleb sees glimmers of hope—and Bright Hope is part of that story.
The Church in Haiti Responds with Hope
Despite the chaos, God is still at work through the local church. Bright Hope partners with seven churches in northeastern Haiti, and through these faithful congregations, lives are being transformed.
Caleb explained that Bright Hope’s ministry in Haiti centers around three pillars:
- Hope for Today – Meeting urgent physical needs
- Hope for Tomorrow – Investing in long-term development
- Hope for Eternity – Pointing people to Christ
Here are just a few ways this vision is coming to life:
- Educational Support: Last year, Bright Hope provided school furniture and books for hundreds of children, helping them stay on track despite disrupted schooling.
- Agricultural Projects: Farmers received access to quality seeds to grow food and generate income—supporting both immediate needs and long-term sustainability.
- Savings Groups: More than 110 savings groups are now active across partner communities. Members pool their money and offer one another small loans to pay for school fees, start businesses, or invest in crops.
- Goat-Breeding Program: Families are also participating in a goat-breeding initiative, which helps provide food and income over time. This simple but effective project is building resilience and restoring dignity.
Faith That Endures in Haiti
Caleb’s testimony reminds us that even in the most difficult circumstances, God is still working through His people. The local church in Haiti remains a beacon of hope, offering not only physical help but also spiritual encouragement.
“Thanks to God,” Caleb said, “we can continue to serve. Even from here in Canada, I get to support the work in Haiti, lead our staff, and share what God is doing with others.”
