Education: A Proven Path Out of Poverty

“An education provides one of the surest ways to kickstart a young person’s journey out of extreme poverty!” ~ C.H. Dyer

As the early morning rays dance on the dirt floor of her ten-by-ten-foot hut in the slums of Nairobi, Joy’s heart soars. Anticipation and hope propel her forward as she dresses for the day. She can’t wait for the jewels of knowledge she will discover at school

While many impoverished girls get lured into sex trafficking or destructive marriages, Joy has received the gift of education— an education that will give her the tools to build a bright future.

In the middle of unprecedented global inflation, Bright Hope is determined to continue sharing the gift of education with many more girls just like Joy!

Growing up in the Mathare Valley slum, Joy and her siblings didn’t have the money to attend school. But thanks to your giving, Bright Hope offered Joy a merit scholarship that covers part of her tuition. And for years, Joy has scored at the very top of her class— especially in science!

Hope Through Education

Now in 6th grade, Joy aspires to become a forensic surgeon and work with the local police. Reflecting on how grateful she is for her merit scholarship, Joy shared: “The scholarship helps in that it improves my life, and it also motivates me to work harder and harder in my education.”

Over our 50+ years of ministry among the extreme poor, we have learned that the generational cycle of poverty is hard to break! Impoverished kids often go to bed with hungry stomachs. They don’t have a chance to go to school or gain skills for the future. Some even grow up to be hopeless parents who can’t feed their kids.

But you can give the gift of education today! When a student learns a trade or earns a degree, he or she can get a job that covers their basic needs and even start to save for the future. Before you know it, the scholarship you funded has helped someone break free from poverty! Help us give students in Nairobi a new life of self-sustainability.
